What Soldiers Look Like Before, During and After War [Photography]

Photographer Claire Felicie's Marked project shows the faces of soldiers before, during and after war. The differences are slight but undeniable. Skin is weathered, wrinkles are deeper and eyes are sadder. See for yourself. More »

Time Warner Cable shows Android some love with My TWC app and TWC TV for phones

We're still waiting for Time Warner to bring its live TV streaming to Android, but the platform is enjoying some exclusive support today with two new apps. The first is the My TWC account management app which lets subscribers view their services, pay bills, adjust call forwarding and, soon, tap into their voicemail remotely. The other one is a new version of its TWC TV app, reformatted to work on phones even while the TWCable TV app on iOS is still a tablet only affair. iPhone and Android owners alike shouldn't have to wait long for their relief however, as the iPhone edition is slated to arrive in January, and ICS-enabled live TV streaming is still on the roadmap for "early next year." Hit up the corporate blog for the full feature lists and breakdowns, or just head over to the Android Market to install either free app.

GSM Galaxy Nexus 4.0.2 update rolls out, matches its cousin on Verizon

After the Verizon LTE Galaxy Nexus finally appeared and was (almost) immediately updated yesterday, it enjoyed the briefest of possible periods as the highest official Android version available. Now, owners of GSM-equipped Galaxy Nexus phones are getting the same bundle of tweaks shoved their way in a quick 8.7MB download. Of course, even these pure(r) Nexus phones are still slightly behind the bleeding edge represented by v4.0.3, which was unveiled earlier today and almost simultaneously made available on the Nexus S -- isn't Android great?

Siri's Mysterious Brain Fog

The performance of Apple's iPhone voice-activated "personal assistant" when asked for information about abortion information has created a tempest of controversy for the Cupertino, Calif. company, though the problem is likely a technological one, rather than part of some hidden political agenda. However, the gaffe could create potential trust problems for Apple in the future.

Ask Engadget: best over-the-ear headphones?

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is coming to us from Simon, who seems interested in something a bit more... substantial than in-ear monitors, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.
"I'm looking for a quality piece of over-the-ear headphones to go with my continuously growing iTunes library. That means I'm also looking for a set that comes with an inline mic / control akin to the official pair of Apple bundles in with the iPhone. I've been looking at the Marshall FX cans but as this is my first real foray into audio equipment I'm more hesitant than usual."
Loving your cans? Not so much? Let us know your experience either way in comments below!

Chrome to gain plug and play gamepad support and WebRTC video chat in 2012

Seems like Big G updates its browser of choice with fresh features every time we turn around, and one of Google's own, dev advocate Paul Kinlan, revealed that another spate of upgrades are arriving for Chrome early next year. The headliner is plug-and-play support for gamepads, but native support for cameras, microphones and open-source video chat app WebRTC are on the docket too -- features that give Chrome some considerable gaming chops when combined with its existing WebGL and HTML 5 prowess and, he says, could bring OnLive to the web without plugins. If you thought Angry Birds on a browser was a great, we can't wait to see what's in store when a proper controller and integrated video chat are involved.

Upcoming Kinect Development Kit Could Change In-Store Shopping

The Xbox Kinect is Microsoft's big push into motion-controlled gaming. You don't even need a controller to play. Just move your hands and feet with gestures that the Kinect understands, and — voilà! — you're kicking footballs, competing in dance challenges, and shooting down bad guys. But now, one year since its launch, the Kinect has gone way beyond video games. It could change our retail buying experiences, and reinvent the way we shop. A commercial version of the Kinect software development kit will be made available in early 2012, Microsoft announced on Monday, opening the door for businesses to create new applications for the popular platform.

There Are 10 Million People in China Using iPhones on 2G [IPhone]

Like a premature bird with stunted wings, the original iPhone's 2G suckiness was a real sore spot in smartphone history. The hardware was great, yeah, but the speed sucked. And yet, 10 million Chinese iPhone owners still ride EDGE. Blech. More »
